Quilting in Toccoa started in 1990 at the Georgia Baptist Convention Center, Toccoa, Georgia. The original name was R&R Quilters Retreat and later Quilters Rescue Mission.
The retreat is held two weeks before Thanksgiving each year. The premise of this time was to give the quilters a break before the holidays started. The dates may vary from year to year but it is generally around the second week of November. The retreat dates for 2015 are November 9-12.
There are classes scheduled with excellent teachers offering a variety of quilting techniques. If you prefer not to take a class you can sew on your own (SOYO) with your friends or guild. Most of the SOYO quilters request to be in room with the same friends from year to year. If a guild wants to sew in a room together we try to accommodate them as well.
Each year it has become a tradition to have a block challenge. We choose a theme and each registrant receives a piece of fabric (approximately 12×12) to design a block as they depict the theme using the challenge fabric. The blocks are judged by the retreat staff and the winners are chosen for two categories (applique and pieced). The blocks are divided between the winners and they are also given some of the challenge fabric to complete their quilt. We have seen some wonderful quilts over the years.
Another tradition is our charity quilts. We choose the pattern and furnish the blocks to be sewn together. Each quilter takes a block and sews it together and we then sew the blocks into a quilt. Each block that is returned earns the quilter a ticket for a prize drawing at the close of the retreat. These charity quilts are given to quilters who attend the retreat and request the quilts for their guild or for the charity that their guild supports. Each year we give out 7 or 8 quilts for charity.
Our vendor for this year is Brenda Arrowood owner of Schoolhouse Quilts, Forest City, NC.
We have great food and accommodations at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center. The rooms and sewing rooms are in the same hotel. You never move your sewing machine during the retreat. The dining hall is a short walk from the hotel. Come join us and finish those UFOs or start a new project. Enjoy the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, great food, make new friends or meet your old friends. There are door prizes and plenty of snacks.
